Ports are very important for our life
Ports in Japan
Since Japan is surrounded by sea, maritime transportation plays an important role in Japan. The focal point of the maritime transportation activities is ‘port’. The energy (crude oil, gas, coal, etc.) and food are necessary for our life. In fact, 99.7% (as of 2004) of imported and exported energy, food and other necessary items come through ports.

Factories and ports
You can almost always find a port near a large factory. Raw materials used in the factory are brought from overseas, and the finished products are exported. That's why a port is very important for factories.
Ports have various functions.
Ports are not used simply as the bases for maritime transport. They are also used as garbage disposal sites or the place that we can walk or play for fun.
Also, during the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, the port played the important role of bringing food, bedding sets, other relief goods, rescue workers and volunteers.
